Extending your disability on parental leave!
Tips and tricks to extend your short term disability in California!
Did you know that technically you can extend your Short Term Disability up to 51 weeks and get paid? While I haven't seen anyone do this personally, the most typical extensions are anywhere from an additional 4-6 weeks depending on your doctor. I think it's important to stress that advocating for yourself after you have a baby is so important!
There are multiple different conditions/complications that can warrant an extension of your short term disability. The most common are:
Postpartum mood disorders (Postpartum Anxiety/Depression)
Pelvic Floor Complications
Mastitis Complications
Feeding complications (with baby)
Infections/complications from C-Section
I think it’s also really important to note that other providers outside of your OB can extend your disability. If you aren’t getting the support you need or you OB is not advocating for you, you can work with another provider!
These providers include:
Psychologist
Psychiatrist
Physicians Assistant
Licensed Midwife
Chiropractor
